The Honest Answer First
If you could visit India in just one month — one month that combines everything the country has to offer — the answer would be November.
The monsoon is over. The skies are clear. The air is cool and dry. The national parks have reopened and the tigers are moving through thinning vegetation. The Taj Mahal stands against a deep blue sky with a clarity not available in any other month. And on November 8, the entire country lights up for Diwali — the Festival of Lights — in the most spectacular single night India offers to any visitor.
Then, sixteen days later on November 24, Varanasi hosts Dev Deepawali — the night that travellers who have seen extraordinary things across the world describe as the most beautiful night they have ever witnessed anywhere on earth.
November is India’s finest month. This guide tells you everything you need to make the most of it.

November Weather Across India
November is the sweet spot that every experienced India traveller knows. The monsoon has completely retreated. No rain. No humidity. No oppressive heat. Just clear skies, cooling temperatures, and perfect conditions for spending entire days outdoors.
Delhi in November
Early November in Delhi is warm and comfortable — days around 25°C to 30°C, evenings dropping to 12°C to 16°C. By mid-November, daytime temperatures settle around 20°C to 26°C with evenings at 8°C to 13°C. Late November brings genuinely cool weather — days around 16°C to 22°C and nights that can dip to 6°C to 10°C.
The honest Delhi November note: Air quality in Delhi typically starts to deteriorate from late October due to crop stubble burning in neighbouring states. Around Diwali (November 8), fireworks smoke compounds the issue. On the worst days, Delhi’s AQI can be genuinely poor.
If you are sensitive to air quality, base yourself in Jaipur or Agra for Diwali week and visit Delhi before November 6 or after November 12. If you are healthy and visiting for Diwali — the experience is completely worth it. Carry an N95 mask for the peak fireworks hours and you will be fine.
What the weather actually feels like: cool mornings that need a light jacket before 9 AM, warm comfortable afternoons perfect for outdoor sightseeing, and pleasantly cool evenings ideal for exploring the bazaars. This is India at its most liveable.
Agra and the Taj Mahal in November
November is one of the two finest months to visit the Taj Mahal — the other being February.
The monsoon has cleared the atmosphere completely. The white marble appears against a deep, saturated blue sky with a sharpness and clarity not available in any other month except February. There is no haze. No dust. No humidity softening the edges. The Taj Mahal in November looks the way it looks in the finest photographs you have ever seen of it — and then exceeds them.
Temperatures in Agra during November range from a comfortable 26°C to 30°C in early November down to 18°C to 22°C by late November, with cool nights between 6°C and 17°C. Sightseeing conditions throughout the month are outstanding.
One critical thing to plan around: The Taj Mahal is closed every Friday. In November 2026, Fridays fall on November 6, 13, 20, and 27. Schedule your Agra visit for any other day.
The Taj Mahal in November is also not yet at its December to January peak crowd levels. You will still queue — but not for an hour. You will be able to move through the monument at your own pace.

Jaipur in November
Jaipur in November is the version of the city that looks the way it does on postcards — and then exceeds them.
Early November days sit around 26°C to 32°C, cooling to 22°C to 28°C in mid-November and 18°C to 24°C by late November. The Aravalli Hills surrounding the city transition from the post-monsoon green of October into the warm golden and terracotta colours of the classic Rajasthan landscape. Amber Fort in this light — the red sandstone glowing amber-gold in the morning sun — is at its most cinematically beautiful.
For Diwali on November 8, many experienced India travellers consider Jaipur the finest city in the country to witness the festival. The Pink City’s terracotta buildings are outlined in lights. Amber Fort is illuminated on the hillside above. The old city bazaars blaze with diyas and marigold garlands. Fireworks burst over the Aravalli Hills in every direction simultaneously.

Varanasi in November
November is Varanasi’s finest month — and the month that contains two of the most extraordinary nights available to any traveller in India.
Diwali in Varanasi (November 8): The ghats — the ancient stone stairways descending to the Ganges — are lined with diyas from end to end. Priests conduct extended Ganga Aarti ceremonies. Devotees launch floating candle boats onto the dark river. Fireworks burst above the ancient temple spires and reflect in the Ganges below.
Dev Deepawali in Varanasi (November 24): This deserves its own section entirely — see below.
Temperatures in November Varanasi are very comfortable — days around 20°C to 28°C, nights around 10°C to 16°C. The Ganges is calm, low, and clear after the monsoon season. November boat rides on the river are the best of the year.
Rajasthan Beyond Jaipur in November
All of Rajasthan is exceptional in November.
Udaipur is possibly the single finest Diwali experience in India. Lake Pichola at full capacity reflects the illuminated City Palace and surrounding hills. The Lake Palace Hotel floats on the dark water surrounded by fireworks reflections. The city is quieter than Jaipur and more intimately beautiful. For couples, Udaipur at Diwali is extraordinary.
Jodhpur — the Blue City in November is at its most photogenic. Mehrangarh Fort glows against deep blue skies in the November evenings. Temperatures have dropped to a perfect 20°C to 28°C.
Jaisalmer — the desert temperatures have become genuinely pleasant. November marks the beginning of the ideal desert season. Camel treks into the Thar Desert dunes with nights under clear desert skies are at their finest from November onwards.
Pushkar — the Camel Fair reaches its peak around Kartik Purnima (November 24). The full moon night at Pushkar Lake, when pilgrims bathe in the sacred waters, is the spiritual crescendo of the entire month. Read our full Pushkar Camel Fair 2026 guide.
Kerala in November
November in Kerala is the transition from the southwest monsoon (ending in October) to a calmer, beautiful period across most of the state.
For Munnar’s tea gardens — beautiful, green and misty, perfect for walking. For the Alleppey backwaters — excellent, with houseboat season in full swing. For Kovalam and Varkala beaches — good, with seas calming and beach shacks reopening. For Kochi — perfect, with the colonial architecture, great food scene, and comfortable temperatures between 25°C and 30°C.
The northeast monsoon brings some rain to the Malabar Coast in November — check specific forecasts for your exact Kerala destinations.
Goa in November
November is when Goa’s famous season properly begins. The monsoon departed in September and October. By November, the beach shacks are open, the markets are running, and the sea is calm and warm.
Early November Goa is actually the finest time to visit — warm at 25°C to 32°C, the beaches clean from the monsoon rains, and the December crowd not yet arrived. The International Film Festival of India (IFFI) is held in Goa in November, adding a cultural dimension to the beach experience.
If you are combining the Golden Triangle tour with a beach ending, Goa in November is the ideal pairing — fly Delhi to Goa in 2.5 hours and arrive exactly as the beach season begins.
November Festivals: The Richest Festival Month in India
Diwali — November 8, 2026
Diwali is India’s most significant festival and its most spectacular night. On November 8, every home, every street, every temple, and every public space in India is illuminated with diyas, fairy lights, and candles. Fireworks colour the sky from every direction simultaneously. The smell of incense, gunpowder, and marigold fills the night air.
The five Diwali days run from Dhanteras on November 6 through Bhai Dooj on November 10. The main Lakshmi Puja night is November 8.
Best cities for Diwali 2026:
Jaipur is the most spectacular Diwali in Rajasthan. The Pink City outlined in lights, Amber Fort illuminated on the hillside, fireworks over the Aravalli Hills. The old city bazaars from Bapu Bazaar to the City Palace transform into a river of light and flame. Most popular with international visitors — book 3 to 4 months ahead.
Udaipur offers the most romantic Diwali. Lake Pichola reflects the lights of the City Palace. The Lake Palace Hotel floats on the dark water surrounded by fireworks reflections. Quieter than Jaipur, more intimate, supremely beautiful. Best for couples.
Varanasi gives you the most spiritual Diwali. The ghats lined with diyas, extended Ganga Aarti, floating candle boats on the sacred river. Profoundly moving.
Amritsar offers a uniquely Sikh Diwali — the Golden Temple complex illuminated and reflected in the Sarovar, surrounded by tens of thousands of devotees celebrating Bandi Chhor Divas.
Delhi delivers the most spectacular fireworks and the grand scale of one of the world’s great megacities in full celebration. Note: air quality can be poor on Diwali night. Carry an N95 mask.

Dev Deepawali — November 24, 2026 (Varanasi)
If you plan around only one date in November, plan around November 24 in Varanasi.
Dev Deepawali — the Diwali of the Gods — falls on the full moon of the Hindu month of Kartik, exactly fifteen days after Diwali. It is celebrated only in Varanasi, and nothing else in India compares to it.
Every step of every one of Varanasi’s 84 ghats — stretching six kilometres along the Ganges — is illuminated with hundreds of thousands of earthen oil lamps placed from the waterline to the very top of each ghat. The entire six-kilometre staircase of the world’s oldest living city glows with flame, reflected in the full moon river below.
Seen from a boat on the Ganges as darkness falls on that full moon night, the effect is beyond description. Travellers who have witnessed extraordinary things all over the world — the aurora borealis, the temples of Angkor at sunrise, the Sahara under a full moon — describe Dev Deepawali as the single most beautiful sight they have ever seen.
Plan for November 23 to 25 in Varanasi. Stay in a ghats-facing hotel. Be on a boat on the river by 5:30 PM on November 24. Hotels facing the ghats — BrijRama Palace, Suryauday Haveli — sell out five to six months before Dev Deepawali every year. If you are reading this in August 2026, book today.
Pushkar Camel Fair — November 17 to 24, 2026
The Pushkar Camel Fair — one of the world’s largest and most remarkable cultural gatherings — runs from November 17 to 24, 2026, reaching its spiritual peak on Kartik Purnima (November 24).
Pushkar is a small sacred town in Rajasthan, 140 km from Jaipur. For the fair, it transforms completely. Tens of thousands of camels, horses, and cattle are brought to the desert plain outside town by traders from across Rajasthan. Around the livestock market, an entire cultural festival grows — folk dancers, musicians, camel races, hot air balloon rides, craft bazaars, and the sacred ritual bathing at Pushkar Lake on the full moon.
For Golden Triangle travellers, Pushkar is four hours from Jaipur and can be seamlessly added to a Rajasthan itinerary.

Chhath Puja
One of the most visually striking and least-known festivals of North India. Celebrated primarily in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and along the Yamuna in Delhi, Chhath Puja is a four-day festival dedicated to the Sun God. The central ritual involves standing in river water at sunrise and sunset, offering prayers with brass and bamboo offerings while chanting folk songs.
The ghats of Patna and the Yamuna riverbank in Delhi during Chhath Puja are extraordinary — hundreds of thousands of devotees standing waist-deep in the river at dawn and dusk.
Guru Nanak Jayanti
The birthday of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism, falls in November 2026. In Amritsar, the Golden Temple celebrates with three days of continuous kirtan (devotional singing), free community meals, and candlelit processions through the city. If you are visiting Amritsar in November, Guru Nanak Jayanti adds a profound extra dimension to an already extraordinary destination.
Wildlife Safaris in November 2026
November is the beginning of prime wildlife safari season across all of North India’s national parks. The parks reopened on October 1, but by November the monsoon vegetation has dried and thinned significantly — dramatically improving animal visibility compared to the lush growth of October.
Ranthambore National Park, Rajasthan — November is one of the best months for tiger sightings. The tall monsoon grass has died back. Waterholes have become the primary water source and the tigers visit them regularly and predictably. November sighting rates are among the highest of the season. Leopards, sloth bears, striped hyenas, and over 300 bird species are also active.
Jim Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand — Excellent elephant viewing in November. The forest is atmospheric — golden light through thinning sal trees, the Ramganga River low and clear, wildlife active during the cool morning and evening hours.
Bandhavgarh and Kanha, Madhya Pradesh — Both are outstanding in November. Bandhavgarh has one of the highest tiger densities in India. Post-monsoon November brings high sighting rates and extraordinary forest light.
Kaziranga National Park, Assam — The floodwaters have fully receded. The one-horned rhinoceros are visible on the open grasslands. November and December are among the best months for Kaziranga.
Booking note: Ranthambore jeep safari permits for November open approximately 45 to 60 days in advance on the official Rajasthan Forest Department portal. Zone 1, 2, and 4 are the most popular for tiger sightings and sell out fast. Set a reminder and book the moment permits open for your dates.
Plan a wildlife extension: Our 4-Day Golden Triangle Tour with Ranthambore adds two nights at Ranthambore to your Golden Triangle itinerary — perfectly timed for prime November tiger sightings.
The Golden Triangle in November 2026
November is the single best month for the Golden Triangle — Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur.
Every element aligns. The weather is perfect. The Taj Mahal is at its most beautiful. Amber Fort glows in warm November light. The bazaars are at full energy. And if your dates include November 6 to 10, you experience Diwali within the circuit — adding the world’s greatest light festival to an already extraordinary itinerary.
Recommended 8-day Golden Triangle November itinerary:
Arrive Delhi on November 3. Spend two full days in Delhi — Old Delhi’s Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Chandni Chowk, Humayun’s Tomb on day one; New Delhi’s India Gate, Qutub Minar, and Khan Market on day two. Drive to Agra on November 6 (Dhanteras) — the gold markets are extraordinary on this evening. Spend November 7 at the Taj Mahal at sunrise, Agra Fort in the morning, and Mehtab Bagh at sunset. This is Choti Diwali — the city begins to glow as you leave the monument. Drive to Jaipur on November 8 (Diwali night) via Fatehpur Sikri — arriving in Jaipur in time for the most spectacular Diwali in Rajasthan. Spend November 9 at Amber Fort, City Palace, and the blazing bazaars. Depart November 10.
This itinerary puts you at the Taj Mahal on Choti Diwali and in Jaipur on Diwali night — the finest combination available.
Adding Ranthambore (10 days): After Jaipur on November 9, drive three hours to Ranthambore for two nights and two mornings of jeep safaris. November delivers some of the highest tiger sighting rates of the entire season. Return to Delhi to depart.
Adding Dev Deepawali — the 14-day dream itinerary: Follow the Golden Triangle with Diwali in Jaipur (November 8), then travel onward to Udaipur or Ranthambore for the middle days, arriving in Varanasi by November 22. Spend November 22 to 25 in Varanasi — Dev Deepawali on November 24 is the culmination of the entire trip. This is the finest India itinerary available in any month of any year.

November vs Other Months: The Honest Comparison
October is very good — warm, fresh, and the parks have just reopened. But Diwali falls in November this year, and October doesn’t have it.
December is excellent for weather and wildlife. But it is peak season — hotels cost 20 to 40% more than November, Diwali is gone, and the famous Delhi and Agra winter fog can obscure the Taj Mahal on bad mornings (roughly a 20 to 30% chance of foggy sunrise visits in December).
February is equal to November for weather quality and Taj Mahal visibility. But it has no Diwali, no Dev Deepawali, and the parks have been open for four months already.
November has no serious competitor. It is the only month that combines perfect weather, Diwali, Dev Deepawali, prime wildlife, and prices that sit just below December peak. The verdict is clear — if you have any flexibility over when to visit India, choose November.
What to Pack for India in November
November requires more thought than summer months — the temperature range through the day is significant.
For daytime sightseeing, lightweight clothing works well — t-shirts and light trousers in early November, adding a layer by mid-month. For evenings and early mornings, a proper warm layer is essential by mid-November. A good fleece or light down jacket is ideal — not just for evenings but for early morning Taj Mahal visits, where the 6 AM chill in late November can drop to 7°C to 10°C.
Always carry a scarf or stole for temples and mosques regardless of temperature — covering shoulders and knees is required at all religious sites. Comfortable walking shoes for monuments and easy-slip footwear for temple visits where shoes are removed frequently.
For Diwali night — dress warmly in layers. November 8 evenings in Jaipur can drop to 12°C to 15°C as the night progresses. For the Dev Deepawali boat ride on November 24 — warm layers are essential. The Ganges at dusk on a November full moon night is cold, and you will be on the water for two to three hours.
Booking Tips for November 2026
Book everything three to four months ahead — November is peak season. These specific situations require even earlier booking.
For Diwali dates (November 6 to 10), book heritage hotels in Jaipur, Udaipur, and Varanasi four to five months ahead. Prices rise 30 to 60% above standard November rates for Diwali week, and good properties sell out completely.
For Dev Deepawali in Varanasi (November 23 to 25), book ghats-facing hotels five to six months ahead. These sell out faster than any other dates in India. If you are reading this in August 2026 — book today, right now.
For Ranthambore safari permits, set a reminder for approximately 45 to 60 days before your specific visit dates and book the moment they open on the Rajasthan Forest Department portal. Zone 1, 2, and 4 are always the first to sell out.
For the Pushkar Hot Air Balloon Festival (November 21 to 24) — book three to four months ahead. Balloon slots are very limited and sell out well before the fair.
