Critical: The Taj Mahal Is Closed on Christmas Day 2026
December 25, 2026 falls on a Friday. The Taj Mahal is closed every Friday — this means it is closed on Christmas Day. If you are planning an Agra visit over the Christmas holiday, schedule your Taj Mahal visit for December 24 (Thursday) or December 26 (Saturday). Every year, visitors arrive on Christmas morning to find the gates shut. Don't be one of them.
The Case for December
Why December Is One of India's Best Travel Months
The Golden Triangle in December is a different experience to the one you get any other time of year. The post-monsoon haze has gone, the October heat has faded, and what's left is some of the clearest air and most comfortable sightseeing weather in the subcontinent. Delhi's sky turns a proper deep blue. The Taj Mahal gleams white against it in a way that the hazy months simply can't match. Jaipur's pink sandstone takes on a warmth in December's low golden light that photographers travel across the world to capture.
This is why December — and particularly the Christmas and New Year window — is the single busiest travel period on the Golden Triangle. Hotels fill months in advance, the Taj Mahal has its longest queues of the year, and flights into Delhi are at a premium. The crowds are manageable if you plan around them, but this is not the month to arrive without pre-booked accommodation and monument tickets.
The one caveat worth knowing: Delhi develops a dense winter fog from mid-to-late December that can last until February. It rarely affects daytime sightseeing, but it regularly delays morning flights and trains. If you're connecting through Delhi to an international departure at the end of a late December trip, build in buffer time.
December Weather
What to Expect in Each City
December is comfortably the coolest month across the Golden Triangle. Early December (1st–15th) is mild and perfect — warm enough for shirtsleeves during the day, fresh enough for a light jacket in the evening. From around December 20th, temperatures drop noticeably, especially in Delhi and Agra, and the early morning visits to the Taj Mahal require a proper coat.
Rainfall is effectively zero across all three cities in December — this is deep dry season. You'll see dust, not rain. Sunrise at the Taj Mahal in early December is around 6:40am and the temperature at that hour is typically 10–12°C, so a warm layer for the walk across the forecourt is essential.
Timing Your Visit
Which Week in December Is Best?
December isn't a uniform month on the Golden Triangle — the crowd levels, weather and atmosphere shift considerably depending on which week you travel.
December 1–15
The sweet spot. Perfect weather, manageable crowds, no fog yet. Taj Mahal tickets available without major lead time. Hotels at mid-peak prices rather than Christmas surcharge. Best overall value for December travel.
December 22–Jan 2
Busiest period of the year. Heritage hotels in Jaipur and Delhi fully booked. Taj Mahal at maximum crowds. Prices are significantly higher. The atmosphere in the cities is genuinely festive — but plan and book months ahead. And remember: Taj Mahal closed Christmas Day (Dec 25 = Friday).
December 16–21
Crowds building but not yet at Christmas peak. Weather is excellent — temperature dropping pleasantly, skies still clear. Good window if you want the winter atmosphere without the Christmas surge. Fog risk is low but watch early morning departures from Delhi.
City by City
What December Looks Like in Delhi, Agra & Jaipur
Delhi in December
Cool, festive, occasionally foggy
December transforms Delhi into its most comfortable version. The brutal summer heat is a distant memory, the monsoon humidity is long gone, and what remains is a city that finally feels manageable on foot. The monuments — Red Fort, Humayun's Tomb, Qutab Minar — are best visited in the cool morning hours, before the mid-afternoon sun, which still has warmth even in December.
The city has a subtle festive character in December. Connaught Place and Khan Market put up lights. International hotels host Christmas Eve dinners. The Delhi half-marathon typically falls in November or early December and the city still has a post-event buzz. Dilli Haat, the crafts market, is at its best in December when artisans from across India set up stalls.
- Red Fort and Chandni Chowk are best in early morning — before 9am, before the fog (if any) lifts and before the crowds
- India Gate in December evening is one of Delhi's most pleasant experiences — cool, lit, families out walking
- Watch for Delhi fog from December 20 onward — early morning departures from Delhi airport regularly delayed
- Dilli Haat craft market is excellent for textiles and gifts — particularly good in December when stall variety is highest
Agra in December
Peak Taj Mahal season — but closed Christmas Day
December is arguably the finest month to see the Taj Mahal. The sky is an intense blue — something it simply isn't during the hazy summer and monsoon months — and the white marble of the mausoleum catches that clarity perfectly. Sunrise visits are cold but unforgettable. The mist off the Yamuna burns off quickly and what's revealed in the growing light is the Taj at its most photogenic.
The one thing to hold firm in your planning: the Taj Mahal is closed every Friday, and in December 2026, Friday falls on December 25 — Christmas Day. Plan your Agra visit for December 24 or December 26. Do not assume the monument will be open on Christmas morning. It will not be.
- Taj Mahal sunrise timing in December: gates open at approximately 6:00am, sunrise around 6:45am
- Book Taj Mahal tickets online at least 2–3 days ahead — daily entry is capped and December sells out
- Agra Fort: same era, far fewer tourists — visit the afternoon before your Taj sunrise for the fort views across the Yamuna
- Mehtab Bagh at sunset: the garden opposite the Taj gives an unobstructed view of the mausoleum in golden evening light
- Fatehpur Sikri (1 hr away): the abandoned Mughal capital is open year-round including Fridays — a good alternative if you arrive on Christmas Day
Jaipur in December
Warmest of the three — festive Pink City atmosphere
Jaipur is the warmest and sunniest of the three Golden Triangle cities in December — a meaningful difference when Delhi and Agra are hitting single-digit nights. Days in Jaipur in December are genuinely pleasant at 20–25°C, and the fort visits in that cool, clear air are among the finest experiences on the itinerary.
December in Jaipur also has a festive character of its own. The heritage hotels — Samode Haveli, Dera Rawatsar, Alsisar Haveli — put on Christmas Eve dinners and New Year events that blend Rajasthani hospitality with Western celebration in a way that's genuinely special. If you want Christmas Day itself in India to be memorable rather than awkward, Jaipur is the right city for it.
- Amber Fort: arrive at 8am for the light and before tour groups — the reflection in Maota Lake in December morning is exceptional
- Heritage hotel Christmas dinners book up by October — reserve well ahead if this matters to you
- The December bazaars have the widest range of block-print textiles and Rajasthani crafts of any month — artisans produce for the peak season
- Jaipur Literature Festival falls in late January — if you can extend, it's one of the world's great literary events
