December is India’s golden month.

The monsoon is long gone. The suffocating heat of summer is a distant memory. From the Rajasthan desert to the Kerala backwaters, from the beaches of Goa to the snow-covered Himalayas, the entire subcontinent opens up in December with clear skies, cool temperatures, and a festive energy that builds steadily toward Christmas and New Year.

This is peak travel season in India — and with good reason. The weather is the most comfortable it will be all year across most of the country. Crowds are up, prices follow, but the experience justifies it all. December is also the month of festivals: Rann Utsav in Gujarat, Hornbill Festival in Nagaland, Christmas in Goa and Kerala, and the countdown to New Year in every major city.

Whether you are planning a first visit to India or returning for something deeper, this guide covers everything you need to know about travelling India in December 2026.

Why December is One of the Best Months to Visit India

Most destinations in India peak in winter. The reasons are straightforward.

The weather cooperates everywhere. North India’s summer temperatures can exceed 45°C. December brings them down to a pleasant 10–22°C. South India, which stays warm year-round, settles into its most comfortable, least-humid stretch. The beach destinations — Goa, Kerala, Andaman Islands — are at their clearest and sunniest.

The light is extraordinary. Clear winter skies produce the kind of sharp, golden-hour light that makes Indian monuments — the Taj Mahal, Amber Fort, Hampi — look their absolute best. Photographers consistently rate October to February as the optimal shooting season across the subcontinent.

The festivals are unmissable. December has some of India’s most spectacular cultural events — Rann Utsav, Hornbill Festival, Christmas celebrations in Goa, and New Year’s Eve in every major city. The cultural calendar is richer in December than almost any other month.

The wildlife is at its best. Winter is peak safari season. Ranthambore, Kanha, Bandhavgarh, and Jim Corbett all have high tiger sighting rates in December, when animals move more freely in the cooler temperatures and vegetation thins out, making wildlife easier to spot.

The trade-off is simple: December is busy and prices are higher. Book accommodation and key experiences well in advance — ideally 3 to 4 months ahead for the most popular destinations.

India Weather in December — Region by Region

India in December is not one climate — it is eight. Your experience depends entirely on where you go.

North India (Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Varanasi)

December brings the classic North Indian winter. Days are clear and pleasantly cool — 10°C to 22°C — with bright sunshine through most of the day. Evenings and early mornings drop sharply, reaching 4°C to 8°C in Delhi and lower in hill areas.

Morning fog is the one complication. Between mid-December and late January, dense fog can settle over the Indo-Gangetic plain — affecting early morning visibility at the Taj Mahal and occasionally delaying flights into Delhi. On foggy mornings, the Taj Mahal often becomes clearly visible only after 9 AM rather than at sunrise.

What to pack: Layered clothing — a warm jacket or down coat for mornings and evenings, lighter layers for the afternoon. Gloves and a scarf for the coldest mornings.

Rajasthan (Jaipur, Udaipur, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer)

Rajasthan is at its very best in December. The desert state, brutally hot for most of the year, transforms into the most comfortable version of itself: 15°C to 28°C during the day, 7°C to 12°C at night. The air is dry and clear. The golden light on the sandstone forts and palaces is extraordinary.

This is peak Rajasthan season. Accommodation at heritage hotels and luxury camps fills up fast. Book 3 to 4 months ahead for the popular properties in Jaisalmer, Udaipur, and Jaipur.

Kerala and South India

Kerala in December is warm, dry, and beautiful — 25°C to 32°C through the day, with clear skies and minimal humidity compared to the monsoon months. The backwaters are calm. The beaches along the Malabar coast are at their best. It is an excellent month for Ayurvedic retreats, houseboat stays, and wildlife visits to Periyar and Wayanad.

Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh receive their northeast monsoon through November and into early December — expect some rain in Chennai and coastal Tamil Nadu in the first week of December, tapering off as the month progresses.

Tip: Kerala and Rajasthan pair beautifully in a combined December itinerary — two completely different sides of India, both at their peak, reachable via a short domestic flight.

Goa

Goa in December is everything the postcards promise: 21°C to 32°C, wall-to-wall sunshine, calm seas. This is the most popular month for beach tourism, and Goa in December operates in full festive mode. Christmas Eve in Goa — midnight masses in the Portuguese-era churches, decorated streets, beach parties — is one of India’s most atmospheric seasonal experiences.

Expect premium-season prices and significant crowds, particularly in North Goa. Book accommodation at least 3 months ahead.

Himalayas (Manali, Shimla, Auli, Darjeeling, Ladakh)

The Himalayan destinations split into two experiences in December.

Lower hill stations (Shimla, Mussoorie, Darjeeling): Cold and charming. Temperatures hover 0°C to 12°C, with occasional light snowfall. The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway toy train runs through a frost-covered landscape; Tiger Hill offers some of its clearest mountain views of the year when the skies are sharp and cold.

Higher altitude destinations (Manali, Auli, Gulmarg, Ladakh): Full winter conditions. Manali receives heavy snow in December. Auli’s ski slopes open. Gulmarg in Kashmir is a world-class ski destination from December through February. Ladakh is extreme — -10°C to -20°C — and only for those seeking a very specific, very cold adventure.

Best Places to Visit in India in December 2026

1. The Golden Triangle — Delhi, Agra & Jaipur

December is the single best month to do India’s classic route. The three cities of the Golden Triangle tour — Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur — are all at their most comfortable and photogenic in winter.

Delhi in December is a city transformed from its summer self. The pollution and heat are both lower, the parks and monuments are beautiful in the winter light, and the food and markets are at their most vibrant. Humayun’s Tomb, Qutub Minar, and Lodhi Garden are all excellent in the clear December sun.

Agra and the Taj Mahal — the centrepiece of any Golden Triangle trip — is best experienced in December between 8 and 10 AM, after the morning fog has lifted. The low winter sun hits the white marble at a perfect angle, producing the warm golden-pink tones that make the Taj photographs that live in most people’s imaginations. Read our complete guide to visiting the Taj Mahal in 2026 for everything you need to know about tickets, timings, and the best viewpoints.

Jaipur in December is magnificent. The Pink City’s forts, palaces, and bazaars are all perfectly suited to winter exploration. Amber Fort at sunrise, the City Palace in the late morning, Hawa Mahal in the golden afternoon — December light does everything justice. The city’s rooftop restaurants and heritage hotels are booked out fast, so plan ahead.

A classic 5-day Golden Triangle tour covers Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur comfortably with time at each city’s key sights. It is the ideal introduction to India and December is the most enjoyable month to do it.

Temperature: 8°C to 22°C | Best for: First-time visitors, culture, monuments, photography

2. Rajasthan — Desert Royalty at Its Peak

If the Golden Triangle is the introduction to India, Rajasthan is the deeper chapter. The state rewards slower travel — each of its major cities has its own distinct identity, and December is the season when all of them are at their finest.

Udaipur — the City of Lakes — is dreamy in December. The weather is cool and clear, the lakes shimmer in sharp winter light, and the famous sunset views from the Monsoon Palace and Pichola lakefront are at their most atmospheric. Often called the most romantic city in India, Udaipur in December lives up to the description fully.

Jaisalmer — the Golden City of the Thar Desert — is transformed in December. Camel safaris into the Sam Sand Dunes are perfectly comfortable in the cool desert air. Sleeping under the stars in a desert camp, with temperatures dropping pleasantly at night, is one of India’s genuinely extraordinary experiences. The sandstone fort glows gold in every direction.

Jodhpur — the Blue City — offers Mehrangarh Fort’s towering walls above a sea of blue-painted houses, best photographed from the rooftop opposite or from the Clock Tower market below. December crowds are significant but manageable.

For couples, a Rajasthan honeymoon package in December — combining Udaipur’s romance with Jaisalmer’s desert magic — is one of the most spectacular itineraries India offers.

Temperature: 12°C to 28°C | Best for: Couples, culture, desert experience, photography

3. Kerala — Backwaters, Beaches & Ayurveda

Kerala in December is the subcontinent’s most complete winter destination. The state’s backwater network — a 900-kilometre maze of lakes, rivers, canals, and lagoons stretching along the coast — is at its most serene in the clear winter months. A houseboat journey from Alleppey (Alappuzha) through the backwaters, with one night moored under the stars, is one of the most peaceful travel experiences India offers.

Beyond the backwaters, Kerala’s beach destinations (Kovalam, Varkala, Marari) are warm and sunny. The hill stations of Munnar and Wayanad are cool and mist-covered in the mornings. Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary offers elephant and wildlife sightings. Kerala’s Ayurvedic retreat centres are at their most popular, and December’s cool, dry climate is actually considered the optimal season for Panchakarma and other Ayurvedic treatments.

Christmas in Kerala — particularly in Kochi (Fort Cochin) — is a quietly beautiful experience. The Portuguese colonial churches are lit up, the streets are decorated, and the mixture of Christian, Hindu, and Jewish heritage in Kochi creates one of India’s most unique festive atmospheres.

Temperature: 25°C to 32°C | Best for: Relaxation, honeymoons, wellness, culture

4. Goa — Beaches, Christmas & New Year

Goa in December is an event as much as a destination. The state’s beach towns — Baga, Anjuna, Vagator, Palolem, Agonda — run at full festive capacity from early December through New Year’s Eve. Christmas Eve here, with midnight masses in Basilica of Bom Jesus and the Se Cathedral, beach bonfires, and the general Catholic-Portuguese-Goan festive spirit, is unlike any other December experience in India.

North Goa (Baga, Calangute, Anjuna, Vagator) offers the party, the nightlife, and the water sports. South Goa (Palolem, Agonda, Colva) is quieter, cleaner, and more suited to couples and families seeking beach relaxation over late nights.

New Year’s Eve in Goa is among India’s biggest celebrations — beach parties, hotel events, and countdown parties everywhere. If this is your plan, book accommodation and any event tickets in July or August. December Goa runs on advance planning or premium last-minute pricing.

Temperature: 21°C to 32°C | Best for: Beach holidays, nightlife, Christmas celebrations, couples

5. Ranthambore — Tiger Safari in Peak Season

December is one of the very best months for wildlife in India. Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan — India’s most famous tiger reserve — is in full safari season, with high tiger visibility as vegetation thins and animals move more actively in the cooler temperatures.

Ranthambore’s tigers have a reputation for being the most frequently and openly sighted of any major Indian reserve. The park’s distinctive landscape — dry deciduous forest, ancient fort ruins, and a series of lakes — creates a dramatic backdrop for safari. Morning temperatures in December make open-top jeep safaris genuinely comfortable.

For travellers combining Rajasthan with wildlife, a Golden Triangle tour with Ranthambore is one of the most popular extended itineraries. Delhi–Agra–Ranthambore–Jaipur covers culture, monuments, and safari in a single circuit.

Read our complete best time to see tigers in India guide for safari season details across all the major Indian reserves.

Temperature: 10°C to 25°C | Best for: Wildlife enthusiasts, photography, families

6. Rann of Kutch, Gujarat — Rann Utsav

The Rann Utsav is one of India’s most spectacular and least-known major festivals. Every winter, the vast white salt desert of the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat transforms into a glowing festival ground — luxury tent cities rise from the salt flats, folk musicians and dancers perform under starlit desert skies, and the white expanse of the Rann in full moonlight is one of the most surreal landscapes in South Asia.

Rann Utsav 2026 runs from late October through late February, with December being the peak period. The programme includes Gujarati folk dances (Garba and Dandiya), handicraft exhibitions, local cuisine, camel rides, and cultural performances representing the diverse communities of Kutch.

The accommodation is in pre-erected tent cities ranging from comfortable to luxury — book early, as December bookings sell out months in advance. The nearest major airport is Bhuj (1.5 hours from the festival site) or Ahmedabad (5 hours).

Temperature: 10°C to 30°C (cold nights) | Best for: Culture, photography, unique experiences

7. Varanasi — The Ganges in Winter

Varanasi in December is the holiest city in India at its most evocative. The morning mist rolls off the Ganges, catching the first light of the dawn sky and turning the river gold. The ghats — those ancient stone steps descending to the water — are busy with pilgrims, priests, and boatmen from well before sunrise. The evening Ganga Aarti, performed each night at Dashashwamedh Ghat, draws hundreds of devotees and visitors and is one of the most powerful visual and spiritual experiences India offers.

December temperatures in Varanasi (11°C to 23°C) make the classic sunrise boat ride — out on the river at 5:30 AM, watching the ghats wake up through the mist — genuinely magical rather than sweaty. The light is extraordinary. The cold adds an atmosphere that is difficult to describe without having been there.

Varanasi works beautifully as an extension of the Golden Triangle. Many travellers do Delhi–Agra–Jaipur and add a 2-day Varanasi extension. See our Golden Triangle with Varanasi itinerary for how this works in practice.

Temperature: 11°C to 23°C | Best for: Spiritual experience, photography, culture

8. Andaman Islands — Tropical Winter Paradise

For travellers wanting beaches without Goa’s December crowds, the Andaman Islands are India’s finest alternative. The sea here — turquoise, warm, and extraordinarily clear — is at its calmest and most beautiful from November through April. Radhanagar Beach on Havelock Island is consistently rated among the best beaches in Asia.

The Andamans offer more than beaches: snorkelling and diving on untouched coral reefs, the sobering history of Cellular Jail (where the British imprisoned Indian independence fighters), and the experience of island hopping through the archipelago on ferries through impossibly blue water.

December temperatures in the Andamans hold steady at 25°C to 32°C — warm and sunny, with no rain and calm seas ideal for water sports.

Getting there: Fly from Delhi, Kolkata, or Chennai to Port Blair (Veer Savarkar International Airport). Ferries connect Port Blair to Havelock, Neil, and other islands.

Temperature: 25°C to 32°C | Best for: Beaches, diving, snorkelling, honeymooners

9. Darjeeling — Winter Himalayan Magic

Darjeeling in December is cold, quiet, and utterly beautiful. The temperatures drop to 0°C to 12°C, and the higher ridges occasionally receive light snow. The Kanchenjunga views from Tiger Hill are some of the sharpest and clearest of the year — cold, dry winter air produces exceptional visibility, and the mountain stands against a deep blue sky in a way that mist-season visitors never see.

The town is quieter in December than in October or April, which makes it more pleasant for those who want the mountain experience without the crowds. The toy train through a frost-edged winter landscape, the warm cups of first-flush Darjeeling tea at Glenarys or Keventer’s, the monastery visits in the crisp morning air — all of it has a particular December quality.

Temperature: 0°C to 12°C | Best for: Mountain views, solitude, tea culture, photography

10. Nagaland — Hornbill Festival

The Hornbill Festival is one of India’s most extraordinary and least-visited cultural events. Running from 1–10 December every year at Kisama Heritage Village, 12 kilometres from Kohima, the festival brings together all 17 Naga tribal groups in a celebration of traditional dances, music, art, crafts, and food.

The Naga tribes — with their distinctive warrior traditions, elaborate beadwork and headdress, and ancient songs — present a side of India that most international visitors never see or even know exists. Mock war dances, archery competitions, tribal cooking demonstrations, and the Hornbill Music Festival (featuring both traditional Naga and international acts) fill the programme.

Getting to Nagaland requires some planning. Fly to Dimapur (the nearest airport, 75 km from Kohima) from Kolkata, Guwahati, or Delhi. Indian nationals need an Inner Line Permit (ILP). Foreign nationals require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) — apply well in advance.

Temperature: 5°C to 20°C | Best for: Offbeat travellers, cultural enthusiasts, photographers

December Festivals in India — 2026 Calendar

December Travel Tips for India

Book Everything Early

December is India’s busiest travel month. The Golden Triangle monuments, Rajasthan heritage hotels, Goa beachside accommodation, Ranthambore safari jeeps, Rann Utsav tent bookings, and Hornbill Festival tickets all fill up months in advance. October is not too early to book for December travel.

Plan Around the Fog

Morning fog in North India — particularly dense in the second half of December and into January — affects visibility at the Taj Mahal and can delay flights into Delhi. Build flexibility into your itinerary. If you’re planning a Taj Mahal sunrise visit, have a backup plan for foggy mornings. The monument is beautiful in the soft diffused light of a foggy day, just different from the clear-sky sunrise experience.

For a full breakdown of timing your Taj Mahal visit, read our guide on the best time to visit Agra and the Taj Mahal.

Pack Smart for Two Climates

Many December India itineraries combine North India (cold) with South India or Goa (warm). This means packing for two completely different climates. The practical solution: lightweight layers that work in both contexts, a packable down jacket for the north, and a day bag large enough to carry what you’ve shed when you fly south.

Budget for Peak Season

December prices are 20–40% higher than the shoulder season across most popular destinations — accommodation, tours, domestic flights, and heritage hotel rates all rise in peak season. Budget accordingly. That said, the December experience in most places justifies the premium.

Get Your Visa Sorted

India requires a visa for most international visitors. The e-Visa is available for citizens of most countries and can be applied for online with a processing time of 3 to 5 business days. Apply at least 2 weeks before travel to allow for any processing delays. The e-Visa allows stays of up to 90 days for tourism.

Consider a Guided Tour

December’s crowds make logistics more complex — monument queues are longer, transport books up faster, and advance planning becomes more critical. A guided tour with pre-booked entries and transport removes the logistical burden entirely. Squid Travel India’s December tours include all advance bookings so you walk in without queueing.

What to Avoid in December

Avoid Ladakh unless you’re prepared for extreme cold. The Leh–Manali and Leh–Srinagar highways are closed by snowfall. Temperatures drop to -20°C at night. Only experienced winter trekkers or those specifically seeking the Chadar frozen river trek should consider Ladakh in December.

Avoid Tamil Nadu’s coast in early December. The northeast monsoon brings rainfall to Chennai and coastal Tamil Nadu through the first week of December. By mid-December it clears — but plan accordingly if you’re heading to Mahabalipuram or the Coromandel coast in the first two weeks of the month.

Don’t underestimate North Indian cold. First-time visitors to the Taj Mahal in December are regularly surprised by how cold an Agra morning can be. The 4°C sunrise at the East Gate of the Taj Mahal in mid-December is genuinely cold. Bring a proper jacket.

Is December a Good Time to Visit India for the First Time?

Unequivocally, yes.

December and February are the two months most consistently recommended to first-time India visitors. The weather is the most forgiving it will be all year. The major monuments are all accessible without weather-related limitations. The wildlife is active. The festivals are extraordinary.

The downside — cost and crowds — is real but manageable with advance planning. Book 3 to 4 months ahead for the best accommodation and guaranteed safari slots. Use a reputable tour operator who handles advance bookings. Build one or two buffer days into your itinerary for flight delays, fog mornings, or simply discovering that you want to stay somewhere longer.

India in December, done with proper planning, is one of the world’s great travel experiences.
