A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of India’s most underestimated attractions, Jantar Mantar is an open-air astronomical observatory built by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II between 1724 and 1735. It contains 19 astronomical instruments made from stone and marble that are accurate to within two seconds.
The centrepiece is the Samrat Yantra — the world’s largest sundial, 27 metres tall, whose shadow moves at a rate of approximately 1 mm per second. In the 18th century, it could tell the time to within two seconds and predict celestial events months in advance.

The Hawa Mahal is Jaipur’s most iconic image — a five-storey pink sandstone facade of 953 intricately carved latticed windows, designed in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh to allow the royal ladies of the zenana (women’s quarters) to observe street life and royal processions below without being seen themselves.
The structure is only one room deep — essentially an elaborate screen — and from the street, at sunrise, it is one of the most photogenic buildings in India.
