Planning your first trip to India and wondering how long to spend on the Golden Triangle? You’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions we get from travellers arriving from the USA, UK, Europe, Australia, and Japan — and the honest answer is: it depends on what kind of traveller you are.

The Golden Triangle covers three of India’s most iconic cities — Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur. Together, they form a roughly 720-kilometre triangle in North India, connecting the nation’s bustling capital, the city of the eternal Taj Mahal, and the regal Pink City of Rajasthan.

In this guide, we’ll break down every duration option — from a tight 4-day sprint to a leisurely 8-day immersion — so you can choose the itinerary that perfectly fits your time, budget, and travel style.

Golden Triangle Tour for Couples

The Short Answer: 5 to 6 Days is the Sweet Spot

If you want to experience the Golden Triangle properly — without rushing through monuments or spending every evening in a moving car — 5 to 6 days is the ideal duration for most travellers.

That said, here’s how each option looks in reality:

Duration Best For
4 Days Tight schedules, transit travellers, repeat visitors
5 Days First-timers who want the highlights done well
6 Days Comfortable paced travel with room to breathe
7–8 Days Explorers who want depth, not just sights
9–12 Days Those adding Varanasi, Ranthambore, or Udaipur

Option 1: 4-Day Golden Triangle Tour — The Fast Track

Best for: Business travellers, those with limited annual leave, or travellers connecting the Golden Triangle to another destination like Goa or Kerala.

A 4-day tour is absolutely doable — but it requires early mornings, efficient planning, and the acceptance that you’re doing highlights, not deep dives. Here’s what a well-planned 4-day itinerary looks like:

Day 1 — Delhi Arrive in New Delhi. Check into your hotel and freshen up. In the afternoon, visit Qutub Minar — India’s tallest ancient minaret and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the evening, explore the buzzing lanes of Chandni Chowk and enjoy a rickshaw ride through Old Delhi. Dinner at a rooftop restaurant with views of the Red Fort.

Day 2 — Delhi to Agra Early morning drive to Agra (approximately 3.5 hours by road or 2 hours by Gatimaan Express train). On arrival, head straight to the Taj Mahal — arrive before 9am to beat the crowds and catch the morning light on the white marble. After lunch, visit Agra Fort, a formidable red sandstone fortress that housed the Mughal emperors. Late afternoon drive to Jaipur (approximately 4.5 hours).

Day 3 — Jaipur Full day in Jaipur. Morning visit to the magnificent Amber Fort — ride an elephant or jeep up to the gates and explore the ornate palace interiors. Continue to Jal Mahal (the water palace) for photos. After lunch, visit the City Palace, the royal residence that’s still home to the Jaipur royal family, and the iconic Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds). Evening exploration of Jaipur’s vibrant bazaars — shop for block-printed textiles, blue pottery, and gemstones.

Day 4 — Jaipur to Delhi (Departure) Morning at leisure or optional visit to Jantar Mantar, the remarkable 18th-century astronomical observatory. Drive or fly back to Delhi for onward travel.

What you get: All three cities, all the iconic monuments, a genuine taste of India. ⚠️ What you miss: Slow mornings, spontaneous exploration, the ability to linger anywhere.

Option 2: 5-Day Golden Triangle Tour — The Most Popular Choice

Best for: First-time visitors to India who want to see everything important without feeling rushed.

This is Squid Travel India’s most booked Golden Triangle duration — and for good reason. The extra day gives you breathing room in Delhi, allows for a sunrise AND sunset visit to the Taj Mahal if you wish, and means you’re not permanently exhausted by Day 3.

Day 1 — Arrive Delhi Airport transfer, hotel check-in, rest and acclimatise. Evening stroll through Connaught Place — Delhi’s elegant colonial-era shopping and dining hub.

Day 2 — Delhi Sightseeing Full day exploring Delhi. Morning in Old Delhi — visit the magnificent Jama Masjid (India’s largest mosque), cycle rickshaw through Chandni Chowk, and stop at the Red Fort for its spectacular exterior and history. Afternoon in New Delhi — India Gate, the grand Rajpath boulevard, Humayun’s Tomb (the architectural forerunner of the Taj Mahal), and the serene Lodhi Garden. Evening at Hauz Khas Village — one of Delhi’s most atmospheric dining and arts neighbourhoods.

Day 3 — Delhi to Agra Morning drive or train to Agra. Taj Mahal visit timed for late morning after the initial crowds thin. Expert guide explains the history, love story, and architectural secrets of this extraordinary monument. Lunch break. Afternoon at Agra Fort and optional visit to the haunting ruins of Fatehpur Sikri — Akbar’s abandoned 16th-century capital, 40km from Agra. Overnight in Agra — highly recommended to experience the Taj Mahal area at dusk.

Day 4 — Agra to Jaipur Optional early morning return to the Taj Mahal at sunrise — one of the most beautiful sights in the world and genuinely worth the 5am alarm. Drive to Jaipur via the Fatehpur Sikri stop if not visited the previous day. Afternoon arrival in Jaipur. Evening visit to Amber Fort for the dramatic light show if visiting in season.

Day 5 — Jaipur to Delhi Full morning in Jaipur — City Palace, Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar, and the colourful bazaars of the old walled city. Afternoon drive back to Delhi or onward flight to next destination.

What you get: Everything important, seen properly, with genuine memories rather than blurred impressions. ⚠️ What you miss: The ability to get truly lost anywhere — you still have a schedule to keep.

Option 3: 6-Day Golden Triangle Tour — The Comfortable Choice

Best for: Travellers who want to travel at a relaxed pace, senior travellers, families with children, or anyone who dislikes feeling rushed on holiday.

Six days adds one full extra day that can be used however you wish — a morning cooking class in Delhi, an extra half-day in Agra to see the Mehtab Bagh (the moonlit garden across the river from the Taj), or a longer afternoon in Jaipur’s bazaars without the taxi waiting outside.

The 6-day itinerary follows the same structure as the 5-day version but with a full extra day distributed across one of the three cities based on your interests. Most travellers choose to add the extra day in Jaipur — it’s the largest city of the three in terms of sightseeing options and has the most rewarding bazaar experience.

Additional experiences possible with Day 6:

  • Textile block-printing workshop in Jaipur
  • Cooking class learning Rajasthani dal baati churma
  • Visit to Nahargarh Fort for panoramic sunset views over Jaipur
  • Half-day trip to Abhaneri Step Well (Chand Baori) — one of India’s most photogenic ancient structures, 95km from Jaipur
  • Elephant sanctuary morning at Amer

What you get: A genuinely relaxing holiday that doesn’t feel like a sightseeing marathon. ⚠️ What you miss: Honestly, very little. This is the sweet spot for most travellers.

Option 4: 7 to 8 Days — The Golden Triangle with an Extension

Best for: Travellers who want to go deeper, add a fourth destination, or have always dreamed of a complete North India experience.

With 7 or 8 days, you can add one meaningful extension to the classic Golden Triangle. The most popular additions are:

Golden Triangle + Ranthambore (7 Days)

Add a 2-night tiger safari at Ranthambore National Park — one of India’s best places to spot Bengal tigers in the wild. Located just 3 hours from Jaipur, Ranthambore slots in perfectly at the end of your Jaipur visit. Morning and afternoon jeep safaris give you two chances to spot tigers, leopards, sloth bears, and hundreds of bird species.

Golden Triangle + Varanasi (8 Days)

Add 2 nights in Varanasi — India’s holiest city and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth. The Ganga Aarti ceremony at Dashashwamedh Ghat at dusk is a profoundly moving experience that many of our travellers describe as the single most memorable moment of their entire India trip. Best reached by overnight train from Agra or a short flight from Delhi.

Golden Triangle + Udaipur (8 Days)

Add 2 nights in Udaipur — the Lake City of Rajasthan and arguably the most romantic city in India. Famous for its shimmering Lake Pichola, island palaces, and rooftop restaurants, Udaipur makes a perfect final stop before flying home. Best reached by train or flight from Jaipur.

Golden Triangle + Rishikesh (7 Days)

Add 2 nights in Rishikesh — the yoga capital of the world, set on the banks of the Ganga in the Himalayan foothills. Perfect for spiritual travellers, yoga practitioners, or anyone who wants to add white-water rafting and mountain scenery to their Golden Triangle experience.

How Much Time Do You Actually Need at Each City?

City Minimum Recommended If You Love History
Delhi 1 day 2 full days 3 days
Agra Half day 1 full day 1.5 days
Jaipur 1 day 1.5–2 days 2–3 days

Delhi is consistently underrated by first-time visitors. Most travellers budget one day and wish they’d given it two. Old Delhi alone — the Red Fort, Jama Masjid, Chandni Chowk, Humayun’s Tomb, and the spice market — can comfortably fill a full day.

Agra is often over-estimated. The Taj Mahal is extraordinary, but Agra city itself is compact. One full day covers the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, and Fatehpur Sikri comfortably. The real reason to spend a night in Agra is the Taj Mahal at sunrise — which is an experience in a completely different category to a daytime visit.

Jaipur consistently surprises travellers who think “it’s just a city.” The walled old city, Amber Fort, City Palace, Hawa Mahal, Nahargarh Fort, and the bazaars can genuinely fill two full days — especially if you factor in shopping.

Best Time to Do the Golden Triangle Tour

No matter which duration you choose, timing matters enormously on the Golden Triangle.

October to March — Peak Season ✅ (Highly Recommended) Cool, dry, and pleasant weather across all three cities. Daytime temperatures range from 15°C to 25°C. This is the best time for the Golden Triangle, particularly November to February. Book well in advance during this period as hotels fill up fast.

April to June — Summer ❌ (Not Recommended) Temperatures regularly exceed 40°C, sometimes reaching 45°C in May and June. Sightseeing in this heat is genuinely exhausting and potentially dangerous for those not acclimatised to it. Not recommended unless you have no alternative.

July to September — Monsoon ⚠️ (Possible but Challenging) The monsoon brings cooler temperatures but heavy rainfall, high humidity, and occasional flooding. The Taj Mahal in the rain can be atmospheric, but outdoor sightseeing becomes difficult. If you must travel in monsoon, late September is the most manageable window.
