December is one of the finest months to be in India. The monsoon is long gone, the air is clear and cool, and the country is in full festival mode heading into Christmas and New Year. Whether you're planning a Golden Triangle itinerary through Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, or considering Goa or the northeast, December 2026 has something extraordinary on offer.
This is the complete guide to India's major festivals in December 2026 — with dates, locations and what you actually need to know to plan around them.
⚠️ Critical planning note: The Taj Mahal is closed every Friday without exception. Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday — which means if you are planning to visit the Taj Mahal over Christmas, December 25 is not available to you. Plan your Agra visit on December 24 (Thursday) or December 26 (Saturday) instead.
1. Hornbill Festival — December 1–10, Nagaland
The Hornbill Festival is one of India's most extraordinary cultural events and the one that most international travellers have never heard of. Held every year in the first ten days of December at Kisama Heritage Village near Kohima, it brings together all sixteen major tribes of Nagaland for ten days of traditional music, dance, food, crafts and sport.

Dec 1–10Location: Kisama Heritage Village, Kohima, Nagaland. Named after the hornbill — a bird central to Naga folklore and warrior traditions — the festival is an extraordinary window into one of India's most distinct cultural regions. Expect tribal dances, rice beer, fire demonstrations, indigenous games and evenings of live music under the stars. Accessible via Dimapur airport.
For international travellers, the Hornbill Festival represents a side of India that almost no package tour covers: the northeast, with its dramatically different history, cuisine, traditions and landscape compared to the Mughal north or the beaches of the south. If you have the time to combine it with a Golden Triangle tour, the contrast is remarkable — you see two entirely different Indias in one trip.
2. Christmas in India — December 25
Christmas in India is bigger and more varied than many international visitors expect. Goa is the obvious first choice — its Catholic heritage means the streets fill with lights, midnight mass at the Basilica of Bom Jesus draws thousands, and the beach towns host Christmas parties well into the morning. But Christmas in India is not only Goa.
Christmas Day 2026
Dec 25 — FridayGoa — midnight mass at Basilica of Bom Jesus, beach parties, Christmas markets in Panaji. Delhi — festive decorations around Connaught Place, special menus at Lutyens hotels, the colonial-era churches fill for midnight mass. Shimla — snow-dusted colonial architecture and Christmas carols at Christ Church, the most 'English' Christmas in India. Kolkata — Park Street transforms into a festive corridor; Kolkata's Christmas is locally famous.
One critical point for Golden Triangle travellers: December 25, 2026 is a Friday, and the Taj Mahal closes every Friday. If you have planned a Taj Mahal visit for Christmas Day, change it. Visit on December 24 (the sunrise is extraordinary in the winter light) or December 26. The Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri are open on Fridays and make excellent Christmas Day alternatives.
"Shimla's Christ Church in the snow, decorated for Christmas, is one of those images of India that exists nowhere in any travel brochure — and it's one of the most unexpectedly moving things the country offers."

3. Rann Utsav — December through February, Gujarat
The Rann Utsav is a three-month festival held in the Rann of Kutch — the vast white salt desert in Gujarat — running from December through February. It is one of India's most visually spectacular events: the salt flats stretch to the horizon under a full moon, turning the desert into something that resembles a frozen sea. The festival village, set up near Dhordo at the edge of the desert, offers cultural performances, camel rides, handicraft markets and Gujarati food.
Rann Utsav 2026–27
Dec–FebLocation: Dhordo, Kutch, Gujarat. The full moon nights in December and January are the peak — the white salt plains reflecting moonlight is unlike anywhere else in India. Bhuj is the nearest town with good transport connections. Accommodation ranges from basic tented camps to mid-range cottages; book well ahead as the festival draws large crowds from December onward.
The Rann of Kutch is one of India's great landscapes, and December is the ideal month to visit before the festival crowds build. Combining it with the ancient step-wells and temples of Gujarat makes for a remarkable week-long itinerary — though it requires a separate trip from the Golden Triangle circuit.
4. Sunburn Festival — Late December, Goa
Asia's largest electronic music festival, Sunburn brings international and Indian DJs to Goa for three days of music, typically held in the last week of December. The crowd is young, international and enormous — this is not a quiet beach holiday. But if electronic music is part of what you're looking for in India, Sunburn is a serious global event held in one of the most beautiful settings imaginable.
Sunburn has changed venues several times over the years — it has been held at Vagator Beach, in Pune, and at various Goa venues. The 2026 dates and venue will be confirmed closer to the event. If you are planning to attend, check the official Sunburn website for confirmed dates before booking your flights.
5. New Year's Eve — December 31
India's New Year's Eve celebrations are worth planning around. Goa has the most famous celebrations in the country — beach parties at Anjuna, Vagator and Calangute run until sunrise, and the atmosphere is carnival-like for the final week of December. Delhi's party scene is concentrated around Hauz Khas Village and the major five-star hotels. Jaipur's rooftop venues with views of the illuminated City Palace are quieter and more atmospheric.
For Golden Triangle travellers, New Year's in Jaipur or Delhi is a natural end to a December itinerary — finish the tour at the Taj Mahal on December 30 (not the 26th if you're watching the crowd cycle), then overnight in Jaipur or fly back to Delhi for the New Year.
December Weather Across India
Delhi, Agra & Jaipur (Golden Triangle): Cool and dry. Daytime temperatures 18–22°C, dropping to 8–10°C at night. The mornings are misty in early December, which creates atmospheric Taj Mahal photographs — the white marble disappears into mist in a way that is genuinely otherworldly. Pack a warm layer for early starts.
Goa & South India: Warm and sunny. 28–32°C during the day, perfect beach weather. The sea is calm on both coasts. December is peak season in Goa — prices are higher and accommodation books out fast.
Rajasthan: Similar to the Golden Triangle but slightly warmer during the day in Jaisalmer and Jodhpur. The desert nights get cold — sub-10°C is common. December is excellent for camel safaris.
Himachal Pradesh (Shimla, Manali): Cold to very cold. Shimla sees snow in December, making it beautiful but requiring proper winter clothing. Manali and higher elevations can be inaccessible after heavy snowfall.
"December is when India looks exactly like the photographs. Clear blue skies, no humidity, perfect light at the Taj Mahal. If you have flexibility on when to visit, December and November are the months to aim for."
December on the Golden Triangle
December is one of the two best months to do the Golden Triangle (alongside November). The weather is ideal — cool enough to walk comfortably around monuments, dry enough for clear skies, and the light quality in the mornings is exceptional. There are no monsoon delays, no summer heat, and the crowds at major monuments are lighter than they will be in January and February when domestic Indian tourism peaks.
The one thing to plan carefully is the Taj Mahal's Friday closure. In December 2026, the Fridays are the 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th (Christmas Day). Build your itinerary so that Agra falls on any other day. A sunrise visit on a clear December morning — when the Taj catches the low gold light and the mist rises off the Yamuna behind it — is the single most spectacular thing India offers international visitors.
For a seven-day Golden Triangle in December, a typical private itinerary runs: arrive Delhi → two days Delhi → drive to Jaipur → two days Jaipur → drive to Agra (not a Friday) → day at Taj Mahal and Agra Fort → return to Delhi for flight. The whole circuit is under 600km and works perfectly with a private car and guide.
Planning Your December India Trip
December is peak season across most of India. If you are planning to travel during Christmas week or New Year's, book your accommodation as early as possible — good hotels in Jaipur, Goa and Agra fill six to eight weeks ahead during this period. For a private tour, reaching out to us in October or November gives you the best choice of accommodation and flexibility on dates.
We run private Golden Triangle tours exclusively — Delhi, Agra and Jaipur with a dedicated English-speaking guide and private air-conditioned vehicle. We build each itinerary around your travel dates, including routing around the Friday Taj closure. If you are travelling over Christmas, we will make sure Christmas Day goes to Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri rather than the Taj — both are exceptional, and far less crowded on a public holiday.
