Seven days is the sweet spot for the Golden Triangle. Long enough to do Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur justice. Short enough to work with most international holidays. This itinerary is the one our guides use as a baseline — it builds in a sunrise Taj Mahal visit, time for Jaipur's old city bazaars, two full days in Delhi to recover from the flight, and enough flexibility that an afternoon rainstorm or a delayed train doesn't collapse the whole schedule.
We have structured this as Delhi → Agra → Jaipur, returning to Delhi on Day 7. This is the most logical clockwise loop and places the Taj Mahal — the centrepiece of any Golden Triangle trip — on Day 4 when you are acclimatised and energised, not exhausted on Day 2.
⚠️ Taj Mahal is closed every Friday. Before locking in this itinerary, check that Day 4 (your Agra morning) does not fall on a Friday. December 25, 2026 is a Friday — the Taj will be closed on Christmas Day.

The Full 7-Day Itinerary
Arrival in Delhi — Settle In
Delhi → Hotel
✈ Arrival
🏨 Check-in
Day 1 is intentionally light. Most international flights arrive at Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) early morning after overnight journeys from London, New York, Sydney, or Toronto. The combination of a long flight, the first experience of India's airport, and the sensory intensity of Delhi is enough for one day.
🚗Private car transfer from IGI Airport to your hotel in New Delhi, South Delhi, or Aerocity — confirm in advance, as airport taxis are unmetered and prices vary widely
🏨Check in, rest, and recover from the journey. Recommended areas: Connaught Place (central, walkable), Safdarjung / Defence Colony (quieter, restaurant-rich South Delhi), or Aerocity (closest to airport if departing early on Day 8)
🌆If you arrive in the afternoon and feel rested, an early evening stroll around Connaught Place or a visit to the quiet Lodi Garden is a gentle introduction to Delhi without pressure
🍽️First dinner recommendation: Bukhara (ITC Maurya) for a Delhi institution dal makhani, or Indian Accent for modern Indian cuisine that will recalibrate your idea of what Indian food can be
⭐ Pro tip: Change a modest amount of cash at the airport (₹5,000–₹10,000). UPI QR payments are everywhere in India now, but smaller vendors, auto-rickshaws, and temple entry still prefer cash in the first day or two.
Old Delhi — Mughal Delhi at Full Volume
Red Fort · Jama Masjid · Chandni Chowk · Humayun's Tomb
🏯 Red Fort
🕌 Jama Masjid
🛺 Rickshaw ride
Old Delhi — Shahjahanabad — is one of the most intensely alive urban environments on earth. Start here before the city fully wakes up; by 10am the lanes around Chandni Chowk are impassable by car and extraordinary on foot.
🏯Red Fort (Lal Qila) — the 17th-century Mughal palace complex that anchors Old Delhi. Allow 90 minutes. The Sound & Light Show in evenings is worth attending if your schedule allows.
🕌Jama Masjid — India's largest mosque, built by Shah Jahan. Climb the south minaret for a panoramic view over Old Delhi's rooftops. Closed Friday lunchtimes for prayers; respectful dress required.
🛺Chandni Chowk by cycle-rickshaw — the silver bazaar, spice market (Khari Baoli, Asia's largest), and the dense lanes of Old Delhi are best experienced at rickshaw pace. Book a guide who knows which gates to duck through.
🕌Humayun's Tomb — the magnificent 16th-century Mughal tomb that directly inspired the Taj Mahal. Afternoon light here is beautiful; allow 45 minutes and enjoy the relative quiet after Old Delhi's intensity.
🍜 Lunch in Old Delhi: Karim's Restaurant near Jama Masjid has been serving nihari and kebabs since 1913. Order the mutton korma and the sheermal (saffron flatbread).
New Delhi → Drive to Agra
Qutub Minar · India Gate · Drive 230 km · Agra Fort
🏛 Qutub Minar
🚗 Agra drive
🏯 Agra Fort
Day 3 bridges Delhi and Agra. Do New Delhi's big landmarks in the morning, then head south — the Yamuna Expressway makes the 230 km drive comfortable in 3–4 hours. Arrive in Agra by afternoon for the Agra Fort, and finish the day at Mehtab Bagh for your first glimpse of the Taj across the Yamuna.
🏛Qutub Minar — a 73-metre medieval minaret and the centrepiece of Delhi's oldest medieval city. The complex is calm and photogenic in morning light. Allow 60 minutes.
🌿India Gate & Rajpath — Delhi's grand ceremonial boulevard, worth a 30-minute walk. The lawns are a favourite picnic spot for Delhi families on weekend mornings.
🚗Delhi to Agra by car — depart by 12:30pm at the latest. The Yamuna Expressway is a smooth 6-lane toll road; the journey typically takes 3 to 3.5 hours with a rest stop. Train option: the Gatimaan Express (Hazrat Nizamuddin to Agra Cantonment) takes 100 minutes and is India's fastest train — a great alternative for the Delhi-Agra leg.
🏯Agra Fort — the massive red-sandstone Mughal fort where Shah Jahan was imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb in his final years. From its river-facing tower you can see the Taj Mahal in the distance. Allow 90 minutes.
🌅Mehtab Bagh at sunset — the Mughal garden directly opposite the Taj Mahal on the northern bank of the Yamuna. The view of the Taj at golden hour from here, framed by the garden's central pool, is one of the best photographs of the trip.
🌙 Agra hotel tip: Book a hotel on the south side of the Taj precinct (Taj Ganj area) — you can walk to the east or south gates at sunrise without a taxi. Waking up to a 5-minute walk to the Taj Mahal at 5:30am is one of those India memories that never leaves.
Taj Mahal at Sunrise → Fatehpur Sikri → Jaipur
Taj Mahal · Fatehpur Sikri · Drive to Jaipur
🕌 Taj at sunrise
⚠ NOT Friday
🚗 Jaipur drive
This is the centrepiece day of the Golden Triangle. Set your alarm for 4:45am without hesitation — the Taj Mahal at sunrise, with barely 200 other visitors in the entire compound instead of the 50,000 who arrive by mid-morning, is one of the most extraordinary experiences India offers.
⚠️ Never visit on a Friday. The Taj Mahal closes every Friday. If this day of your trip falls on a Friday, restructure the entire itinerary. There are no exceptions.
🌅Taj Mahal at sunrise — arrive at the gate 20 minutes before official opening time. In peak season (Nov–Feb) the sun rises over the east garden and the Taj marble shifts from pink to gold to brilliant white over 45 minutes. The reflecting pool in the central path is at its most mirror-like before wind picks up around 8am. Allow 2.5 hours minimum.
📸Photography angles: the central reflecting pool straight-on (classic), the octagonal fountain pool for a different frame, from inside the main gateway arch looking through at the Taj, and from behind the western mosque for a crowd-free flank view.
🏛Fatehpur Sikri (en route to Jaipur) — Akbar's abandoned Mughal capital, 40 km west of Agra. Built in the 1570s, mysteriously deserted within 20 years, it is extraordinarily well-preserved. The Buland Darwaza (Gate of Victory) is one of the tallest gateways in the world. Allow 90 minutes.
🚗Drive to Jaipur — Agra to Jaipur is 240 km, typically 4–5 hours by car via the NH21. Depart Fatehpur Sikri by 1pm to arrive in Jaipur by late afternoon for a comfortable hotel check-in and evening in the Pink City.
🌆Jaipur evening — a slow walk through the Johari Bazaar (jewellery market) or Bapu Bazaar (textile market) near the Hawa Mahal. The old city's illuminated gates at night are photogenic and the bazaars stay open until 9pm.
🎟 Taj Mahal tickets: Buy online in advance at asi.payumoney.com — the foreigner entry fee is ₹1,100 (approximately £10 / $14 USD) plus ₹200 for the inner mausoleum. Tickets can sell out on weekends in peak season. Do not buy from touts outside the gate.
Jaipur — Amber Fort & the Palace District
Amber Fort · Jal Mahal · City Palace · Jantar Mantar
🏰 Amber Fort
🏛 City Palace
🔭 Jantar Mantar
Jaipur is slower than Delhi and warmer than Agra in both temperature and atmosphere. Day 5 covers the major monuments — Amber Fort in the morning before the coach groups arrive, then the old city's palace district in the afternoon.
🏰Amber Fort (Amer Fort) — the 16th-century hilltop Rajput palace complex 11 km north of Jaipur. Arrive by 8am to beat the crowds. The Sheesh Mahal (Hall of Mirrors) is the undisputed highlight — every surface lined with tiny mirrors that reflect candlelight into thousands of stars. Allow 2 hours.
🌊Jal Mahal (Water Palace) — the 18th-century palace that appears to float in the middle of Man Sagar Lake on the road back from Amber Fort. The exterior view from the lakeside road is free and photogenic; you cannot currently enter the palace itself.
🏛City Palace — the sprawling palace complex in the heart of Jaipur's old city, still partially occupied by the royal family of Jaipur. The museum contains extraordinary Mughal miniature paintings, royal armoury, and the two largest silver vessels in the world (the Gangajalis, used to carry Ganges water to London for the maharaja's 1902 coronation).
🔭Jantar Mantar — the largest of five astronomical observatories built by Maharaja Jai Singh II in the 18th century. The stone instruments are enormous and still functionally accurate. A guide makes the difference between "interesting stone structures" and understanding how pre-telescope astronomy actually worked. Allow 45 minutes.
📸Hawa Mahal at sunset — the iconic 5-storey "Palace of Winds" on the main bazaar street, its 953 small windows designed to allow royal ladies to observe street festivals without being seen. Best photographed from the rooftop café of the building directly opposite.
🐘 Elephant rides at Amber Fort: We do not recommend elephant rides — the animals used in this trade are known to be kept in poor conditions. The steep hill to the fort is better walked or taken by jeep. Your guide can arrange a jeep.
Jaipur — Old City, Bazaars & Optional Day Trips
Old City deep dive · Nahargarh Fort · Abhaneri or Pushkar option
🛍 Bazaars
🏯 Nahargarh Fort
🌿 Day trips
Day 6 is Jaipur at your own pace — the day for the markets, a deeper wander through the old city's mohallas (neighbourhoods), and the best sunset of the trip from Nahargarh Fort.
🛍Johari Bazaar & Bapu Bazaar — Jaipur is India's gemstone capital (the city cuts 80% of the world's emeralds) and one of the best places on earth to buy textiles, block-print fabrics, blue pottery, and silver jewellery. Go with a specific budget and enjoy the spectacle of the haggling, but know that reputable fixed-price shops (like Anokhi, Cottons, or Soma) offer fair prices without negotiation.
🏯Nahargarh Fort — the 18th-century fort on the ridge above Jaipur. The city views are panoramic and the sunset here is spectacular. The Padao restaurant inside the fort has cold beer and the best city view from a table in Jaipur. Allow 90 minutes in the afternoon.
🌿Optional: Abhaneri stepwell (Chand Baori, 95 km) — one of India's deepest and most geometrically perfect stepwells, featuring in the film The Dark Knight Rises. A 2-hour round trip by car makes a great half-day excursion for anyone who has seen enough palace interiors.
🌸Optional: Pushkar (145 km) — the sacred lake town with its famous Brahma temple, ghats, and bazaars. A full day's excursion; particularly beautiful at dusk when the ghats are lit by oil lamps.
🍽️ Jaipur food to try: Dal baati churma (wheat dumplings with lentil curry) at Laxmi Misthan Bhandar, Jaipur's 100-year-old sweet shop; the masala chai at the rooftop Café Samsara near Hawa Mahal; and the thali at Peacock Rooftop Restaurant overlooking the old city.
Jaipur → Return to Delhi — Departure
Last morning in Jaipur · Drive or fly to Delhi · International departure
🚗 Delhi drive
✈ Departure
The final day depends on your departure flight. Most international flights from Delhi depart late evening or early morning, which means Day 7 is a comfortable drive back to Delhi (270 km, approximately 5 hours) with time for a last lunch and airport transfer.
🌅Sunrise in Jaipur — Jaipur's old city is quiet and beautiful in early morning. A final walk through the empty lanes near Hawa Mahal before the city wakes up is a peaceful end to the Rajasthan part of the trip.
🚗Jaipur to Delhi by car — the NH48 Delhi–Jaipur Expressway (270 km) takes 4.5–5 hours. Depart by 10am for a comfortable Delhi arrival. Alternative: fly (50-minute flight from Jaipur airport), which frees the day for more Jaipur time but sacrifices the road trip through Rajasthan's landscape.
🛍Delhi airport shopping — IGI Terminal 3 has surprisingly good Indian craft and food options airside. Fabindia, Good Earth, and the Rajasthan government emporium in the departures hall are reliable spots for last-minute gifts.
✈️ Departure timing: Allow a minimum of 3 hours before your international departure, and 4 hours if your flight is before 7am or after 10pm (peak immigration queue times). Delhi airport immigration for departing international passengers can take 45–90 minutes in peak season.
Getting Between Cities
How you travel between Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur shapes the entire trip. There are three main options and each makes sense in different situations.
🚗 Private Car with Driver (Recommended)
The most flexible option. Your driver waits at each attraction, carries your luggage, and can stop at Fatehpur Sikri, Abhaneri, or a roadside chai stall at your request. Best for groups of 2 or more. Confirm the car type (SUV for 3+ passengers) and that the driver speaks reasonable English before booking.
🚂 Gatimaan Express (Delhi → Agra)
India's fastest train, 100 minutes from Hazrat Nizamuddin to Agra Cantonment. Premium seats include a meal service. This is a genuinely enjoyable experience and a good choice for the Delhi–Agra leg. Book at least 2 weeks ahead on the IRCTC website or app — foreigner quota seats sell out in peak season.
✈️ Domestic Flights
IndiGo and Air India operate Jaipur–Delhi flights (50 minutes). Useful for visitors with very limited time or who dislike long road journeys. Loses the scenic drive through Rajasthan and requires airport transfers on both ends, which typically adds 2.5 hours. Best reserved for the Jaipur–Delhi return leg.
🚌 Private Luxury Bus
AC sleeper buses run overnight on the Jaipur–Delhi route. Useful for budget-conscious travellers, less comfortable for first-time visitors or anyone not accustomed to overnight buses in India. Not recommended for the Agra leg, where road quality and travel time make private car or train preferable.
Extending Beyond 7 Days
If you have more than 7 days, these extensions integrate naturally with the Golden Triangle route.
- 🐅
Ranthambore National Park (+2 days): India's most famous tiger reserve, 180 km south of Jaipur. Add after Jaipur before returning to Delhi. Two morning or evening game drives gives a good chance of a tiger sighting. November–March is peak tiger-spotting season.
- 🌊
Varanasi (+3 days): India's holiest city on the Ganges requires a flight from Delhi or Agra (no practical road/rail option that doesn't add a day). A dawn boat ride on the Ganges during the Ganga Aarti ceremony is one of India's most powerful experiences. Combine with Sarnath (where the Buddha gave his first sermon).
- 🏜
Udaipur (+2 days): The "City of Lakes" in southern Rajasthan — palaces, lake views, and a slower pace than Jaipur. A 6-hour drive or short flight from Jaipur. Best added as a final leg before flying home from Udaipur or back to Delhi.
- 🎨
Orchha & Khajuraho (+2 days): The medieval temple city of Khajuraho (UNESCO World Heritage, famous for its erotic carvings) and the riverside fortress town of Orchha, between Agra and Varanasi. Often skipped but deeply rewarding for travellers who want to go beyond the tourist trail.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 7 days enough for the Golden Triangle?
+
Seven days is the ideal length for a first Golden Triangle trip. It gives you two full days in Delhi, a sunrise Taj Mahal visit in Agra, and two full days in Jaipur, without feeling rushed. Some visitors do the route in 5 days, but 7 days allows for a relaxed pace, optional day trips, and recovery time. We have run hundreds of 7-day Golden Triangle tours and the feedback is consistently that the pace feels right — never too slow, never a scramble.
What is the best order for the Golden Triangle?
+
Delhi → Agra → Jaipur is the most popular clockwise order, and the one this itinerary follows. It places the Taj Mahal midway through the trip when you are acclimatised and energised. The counter-clockwise route (Delhi → Jaipur → Agra) also works well — some visitors prefer to save the Taj Mahal for last as a final impression before flying home. Both routes return to Delhi.
Is the Taj Mahal open on Fridays?
+
No. The Taj Mahal is closed every Friday — no exceptions. When building your 7-day itinerary, check that Day 4 (Agra morning) does not fall on a Friday. If it does, shift the itinerary by one day. Christmas Day 2026 is Friday, December 25 — the Taj will be closed.
How do I get between cities on the Golden Triangle?
+
A private car with driver is the most flexible option and allows stops at Fatehpur Sikri (between Agra and Jaipur) along the way. The Gatimaan Express train (100 minutes, Delhi to Agra) is an excellent option for the Delhi–Agra leg. Domestic flights (IndiGo, Air India) connect Jaipur to Delhi in 50 minutes and are useful for the return if time is short.
Can I add Varanasi or Ranthambore to a 7-day Golden Triangle tour?
+
Both are popular extensions but need extra days. Ranthambore National Park (tiger safari) integrates naturally after Jaipur and needs a minimum of 2 extra days (9 days total). Varanasi needs 3 extra days and a flight from Delhi or Agra (10 days total). With only 7 days, do the Golden Triangle well rather than rushing three destinations plus an add-on.
What should I wear at the Taj Mahal and Jaipur temples?
+
At the Taj Mahal there is no strict dress code for tourists, but modest dress (shoulders and knees covered) is respectful and culturally appropriate. At Jama Masjid in Delhi and other active mosques, shoes must be removed and head coverings and modest dress are required — scarves are available to borrow at most sites. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for Amber Fort and Agra Fort, both of which involve significant amounts of uneven stone paving.
